Golden State Valkyries vs. Portland Fire Picks and Prediction for Sunday August 30 2026

By: Garrett Beaverson Published 08/30/2026, 05:50 AM ET

The Golden State Valkyries travel to Portland on Sunday, August 30, for a late-season matchup against the Portland Fire at Moda Center. Golden State enters the game at 28-11, sitting second in the Western Conference, while Portland is 16-23 and has already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. The game tips at 7:00 p.m. ET and represents Golden State's final game before the FIBA Women's World Cup break.

This is an especially interesting matchup because both teams are coming off impressive performances. Golden State has won three straight, including road victories over Minnesota and New York, while Portland is coming off a dominant 101-83 road victory over Atlanta. The Fire may be out of the playoff race, but they are playing some of their best offensive basketball of the season at exactly the wrong time for an opponent.

Golden State enters as a substantial favorite, with the market sitting around Valkyries -5.5 and a total around 159.5-160 points. The Valkyries are also approximately -200 on the moneyline, making them the clear favorite despite playing on the road.

The biggest storyline, however, is Golden State's roster situation. The Valkyries will be without Gabby Williams, Janelle Salaün and Cecilia Zandalasini, who have departed for the FIBA Women's World Cup. That takes three significant contributors out of the lineup and gives Portland a much better opportunity than the standings might suggest. Get in on all the action with our free WNBA picks.

Valkyries: Elite Defense Has Golden State Near the Top of the West

Golden State has been one of the biggest success stories of the 2026 WNBA season. The Valkyries enter Sunday with a 28-11 record, good for second place in the Western Conference. They have also gone 8-2 over their last 10 games, averaging 82.3 points per game while allowing only 71.6 during that stretch. That defensive consistency is the biggest reason Golden State has been able to remain near the top of the standings.

Overall, the Valkyries are allowing only 75.6 points per game, the best defensive mark in the Western Conference. Opponents are shooting just 41.9% from the field against them, demonstrating that this isn't simply a team that benefits from opponents missing open shots. Golden State is actively making life difficult for opposing offenses.

The Valkyries' overall efficiency is impressive as well. They have an 82.5 offensive rating, 75.6 defensive rating and +6.9 net rating, while shooting 34.8% from three-point range. That combination gives them a strong statistical profile on both ends of the floor.

Veronica Burton has been one of the most important players in that formula. She is averaging 12.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 43.3% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. Her ability to create shots for teammates without sacrificing defensive pressure makes her particularly important against Portland's fast-paced offense.

Burton has been even better recently, averaging 12.9 points and 3.9 rebounds over her last 10 games while shooting 46.2%. That recent efficiency is important because Golden State is about to lose several of its primary scorers to international competition.

Gabby Williams has been Golden State's leading scorer this season at 14.3 points per game, while also averaging 1.6 steals. She is shooting 40.7% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range. However, she is one of the players who will be unavailable Sunday after joining France for the World Cup.

That absence puts more pressure on Kayla Thornton, who is averaging 7.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Thornton has also demonstrated an ability to provide more offense when called upon; she scored 19 points against Portland in the teams' June meeting, knocking down five three-pointers. Janelle Salaün has also been an important contributor, averaging 12.9 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 39.7% from three-point range. Her departure for France is another major offensive loss for Golden State.

The good news for the Valkyries is that they have already shown they can win games with defense carrying the load. Golden State recently defeated Minnesota 80-66 for its first-ever victory at Target Center, then followed that up with an 89-64 victory over Connecticut and a 79-60 win over New York.

That is a remarkable stretch against three opponents with legitimate playoff aspirations. The question is whether Golden State can maintain that defensive intensity while playing without three important rotation pieces.

Fire: Portland's Offense Is Heating Up at the Right Time

The Portland Fire may have been eliminated from postseason contention, but they are not playing like a team that has nothing left to accomplish. Portland enters at 16-23, but the Fire are coming off one of their most impressive victories of the season. They defeated the Atlanta Dream 101-83 on Friday, dominating the game from start to finish and showing an offensive ceiling that has not always been present during their expansion season.

The biggest stars in that performance were Carla Leite and Emily Engstler. Leite scored 26 points, dished out six assists and recorded two steals, shooting an incredible 69.2% from the field while going 4-for-4 from three-point range. Engstler added 25 points, four steals and four blocks, shooting 78.6% from the field and knocking down three of five attempts from deep.

That is exactly the kind of offensive production Portland will need against Golden State. Leite has emerged as the Fire's leading scorer, averaging 15.9 points and 6.3 assists per game. She is shooting 45.9% from the field, 40.0% from three and 87.3% from the free-throw line, giving Portland an efficient offensive engine capable of creating shots for herself and teammates.

Bridget Carleton is another important piece. She is averaging 14.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting 37.1% from three-point range. Carleton gives Portland a reliable perimeter option who can punish defenses that collapse too aggressively on Leite.

Emily Engstler leads the Fire with 5.6 rebounds per game, and her defensive production has been particularly impressive. Portland's official August fan guide notes that Engstler leads the WNBA in total blocks with 44, averaging 2.0 blocks per game.

That interior defense could become extremely important against a Golden State team that has lost some perimeter scoring. Portland's recent offensive form is also worth emphasizing. Over its last 10 games, the Fire have averaged 90.9 points per game, along with 33.1 rebounds and 20.6 assists while shooting 46.2% from the field. The problem is that their opponents have also averaged 90.0 points during that stretch.

In other words, Portland's offense has been good enough to win games, but the defense has not consistently provided the necessary support. That is a particularly dangerous formula against Golden State. The Valkyries don't need to score 95 points to win. They can win a game 78-72 because their defense consistently limits opponents' quality possessions. Portland will therefore need to avoid turning this into a half-court defensive battle. The Fire would benefit from pushing the pace, getting Leite involved early and forcing Golden State to defend in transition. The Fire also have an interesting three-point advantage. Portland averages 10.4 made threes per game, compared with Golden State allowing 7.9 made threes per game. If Portland can get hot from deep, the Fire have the offensive firepower to make the upset realistic.

Valkyries vs. Fire Picks

  • Spread Pick: Valkyries -5.5

Golden State remains the side we prefer, even with the significant absences. The Valkyries have won eight of their last 10 games, own a 28-11 record and have the league's best defense by points allowed. They also beat Portland 95-77 in the first meeting this season, with Thornton scoring 19 points. The biggest concern is that Golden State will be without Williams, Salaün and Zandalasini. Those three players combined for substantial scoring and playmaking, and their absence makes the -5.5 line considerably less attractive than it would be with a full roster.

Still, Golden State's defensive identity should travel. Portland's recent 101-point explosion is impressive, but the Fire have allowed 91.2 points per game overall. Against a disciplined Valkyries team that has held opponents to 75.6 points per game, Portland will need another unusually efficient offensive performance to cover. Golden State has also won three consecutive road games and enters with significant momentum after beating Minnesota and New York away from home. The betting market currently has Golden State around -5.5, with the moneyline roughly -200 to -210. The absences make this a smaller wager than a normal full-strength Valkyries matchup, but the defensive advantage is still substantial.

  • Over/Under Pick: Under 159.5

The Under is our preferred total play. The market has settled around 159.5 to 160 points, and there are arguments for both sides. Portland has averaged 90.9 points over its last 10 games, while the Fire just scored 101 against Atlanta. That certainly creates Over appeal. However, Golden State's defense is a completely different challenge. The Valkyries allow just 75.6 points per game and have held opponents to 41.9% shooting. Their last three wins were against Minnesota, Connecticut and New York, with those teams scoring just 66, 64 and 60 points respectively.

Golden State's own offense may also be affected by the international departures. Without Williams, Salaün and Zandalasini, the Valkyries could lean even more heavily on Burton's playmaking and a defense-first game plan. That creates a path toward a relatively low-scoring contest. Portland should have enough offense to stay competitive, but the Fire's defensive rating gives Golden State an opportunity to control the game without pushing the pace.
