Montreal Getting Plus Money at Home

Montreal Canadiens moneyline at +102 — At home. Against Utah. A 9-3-3 team with 21 points, the better goaltender by a country mile, sitting there at plus money on home ice. That's the sort of line that pops up maybe a handful of times per month where the value is just sitting there waiting to be taken. Jacob Fowler has been the best story in hockey. A rookie putting up a 7-1 record, .925 save percentage, 2.17 GAA through his first 9 starts. And the books still don't believe in him.

Fowler Has Been a Revelation

Fowler's .925 is the second-best save percentage among goalies with at least eight starts in the league. Behind him Montreal allows 3.13 goals per game and plays structured, low-event hockey at home. Not flashy — Not exciting. Just effective. Karel Vejmelka on the Utah side comes in at 6-5-0 with a .872 save percentage and 3.31 GAA. Every single game. That .872 mark is among the worst for any starting goaltender in the NHL this season. There's a reason this is a plus-money home dog situation and that reason is most people haven't been paying attention to the goaltending.
Here's where it gets fun, utah runs the second-best power play in the NHL at 36.4%. One in every three power play opportunities results in a goal. Still — that is an absurd conversion rate by any measure. But the penalty kill is the other side of that coin. Utah kills penalties at 70.0%, — dead last in the league. Worst mark in the NHL. Montreal's power play is only 13.0%, so the Canadiens probably won't fully exploit it. But Montreal's penalty kill at 81.7%? Well above average, so Utah's power play faces real resistance tonight. Team that lives on the power play meeting an 81.7% kill rate is a fascinating clash of strengths.

Utah's Power Play Is Elite but the Kill Is Atrocious

The gap between .925 and .872 is .053 — That doesn't sound like much until the math gets applied to a real game. On a 30-shot night, that's roughly 1.5 extra goals allowed. Meaning Utah needs to generate about two extra goals just to offset the goaltending deficit. On the road. Against a team that controls pace at home. Even with that offense Utah brings, making up two goals worth of goaltending difference is a massive ask. And montreal scores 3.33 per game. Not elite — Plenty when the goaltender only lets in 2.17.

The Goaltending Gap Tells the Story

At +102 a $100 bet on Montreal collects $102, the implied probability is roughly 49.5%, basically a coin flip. But one team has the second-best goaltending in the league and the other has among the worst. And that's not a coin flip — Montreal's win rate this season sits at 60.0% counting regulation wins plus overtime losses. A $100 bettor blindly backing Montreal at +102 odds with a 60% win rate, that's somewhere north of 10 cents expected value on every dollar wagered. Big difference. Best value play on the board tonight.

Plus Money on a 21-Point Club

Montreal gets the first goal at the Bell Centre and makes Utah chase. Fowler makes a couple sharp saves in the first period and the crowd gets going. Utah pushes back on the power play, converts one, ties it up. The second period is tight, both teams trade chances, Montreal takes a 3-2 lead into the third on a late goal. Utah ties it. Fowler gets tested on two more power plays and holds, then Montreal scores the winner with under six minutes left.

Fowler Shuts the Door

Final score, Montreal 4, Utah 3. Close game start to finish, the goaltending gap was the margin. Fowler makes the save that matters, Vejmelka lets in the one that matters. That's what a .053 save percentage gap looks like in practice.
But utah's 36.4% power play is the X-factor. Three or four penalties from Montreal, and Utah could score twice on the man advantage and blow this open. Discipline is everything for the Canadiens tonight — The other concern is Montreal's 13.0% power play. Can't rely on special teams to generate offense. Everything comes five-on-five, if Utah controls even-strength possession, this pick goes sideways.

The Utah Power Play Danger

Thing is, the goaltending alone should carry Montreal. Fowler has been too good, too consistent, for too many — big number — starts now to write it off as a small sample. The books will catch up eventually. Take the plus money while it's still there.

Best Bet

Best Bet: Montreal moneyline (+102) — A 9-3-3 home team with the second-best save percentage in the league getting plus money. Utah kills penalties at the worst rate in hockey. The value is screaming. Prediction: Montreal 4, Utah 3
