Montreal Canadiens vs Washington Capitals Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Wednesday October 14 2026

Montreal visits Washington on Wednesday night for a meeting between two teams still searching for consistency through the opening weeks of the season. The Canadiens are 3-2-1 and have just survived a 4-3 shootout win over Buffalo. Washington is 3-3-0 after falling 4-2 to Carolina on Tuesday, its second straight defeat. Both clubs are playing on consecutive nights, so the matchup turns less on a generic rest advantage than on who can manage mistakes with a different goalie in net.
The Capitals are modest favorites at Capital One Arena, but the prices are not identical everywhere. Washington has been listed between approximately -114 and -130 across Wednesday's market reports, with DraftKings showing -125 and BetRivers -124. Montreal has been available around +105 to +110. The posted total is generally 6.5 goals. With so little separating the moneylines, the team news matters more than broad claims about momentum.

Montreal Canadiens Betting Analysis

Montreal's best attacking combination remains Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky. Caufield contributed a goal and an assist against Buffalo, while Slafkovsky set up two goals. Suzuki is an important connector between the three: he creates room through the neutral zone and allows Caufield to find shooting positions rather than carrying every entry himself. When that line gains possession with speed, the Canadiens can score without needing to manufacture a long cycle.
There are, however, meaningful holes behind that first line. Ivan Demidov, Oliver Kapanen and Mike Matheson are among Montreal's unavailable players, and Samuel Montembeault remains sidelined with a lower-body problem. Matheson's absence is particularly important against Washington's forecheck because he ordinarily supplies experienced puck movement and defensive minutes. Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson are projected together on the top pair, while Kaiden Guhle and Alexandre Carrier are expected to handle another demanding assignment.
The Canadiens did not close out Buffalo comfortably. They carried a 3-1 lead into the third period but conceded twice before winning in a shootout. That is not proof that Montreal cannot protect leads, but it does underline the danger of giving a patient opponent repeated looks after failed exits. Montreal has now needed the shootout to settle consecutive victories, a reminder that its recent wins have left very little room for error.

Washington Capitals Betting Analysis

Washington has also had difficulty finishing games. The Capitals won three of their first four contests, then lost 5-3 to Seattle and 4-2 at Carolina. They scored 14 goals in their opening four games but only five in the two losses. Wednesday presents an opportunity to restore an attack that remains dangerous through multiple lines rather than relying entirely on Alex Ovechkin.
Alex Tuch is projected alongside Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson, a trio with enough size to challenge Montreal's depleted defense along the boards. Ovechkin is expected to skate with the Protas brothers, while Jordan Kyrou gives the Boone Jenner line another capable finisher. That distribution gives Washington ways to exploit matchups after the Canadiens' top defenders leave the ice. It also makes sustained offensive-zone time a plausible route to beating a fatigued visiting defense.
Washington is not at full strength either. Rasmus Sandin, Matt Roy and Pierre-Luc Dubois are unavailable, reducing defensive depth and flexibility down the middle. Jakob Chychrun will need to supply drive from the back end without leaving his partner isolated. The Capitals cannot assume the Canadiens will struggle to score simply because Montreal is missing players; Caufield and Suzuki are more than capable of exploiting loose coverage.

Starting Goalies and Matchup Outlook

Jakub Dobes is slated to start for Montreal after Jacob Fowler handled Tuesday's game. Dobes has endured a difficult opening stretch, carrying a 4.43 goals-against average and a save percentage around .856 through three appearances. Charlie Lindgren is scheduled for Washington after Logan Thompson stopped 31 shots against Carolina. Lindgren has played less this season, making this a comparison of two uncertain individual performances rather than a clear advantage based on season-long goalie statistics.
The tactical edge for Washington comes from forcing Montreal's defense to turn under pressure. Wilson, Tuch and Jenner can establish possession below the goal line, while Strome and Ovechkin can punish the resulting breakdowns. Montreal's counter is straightforward: use its first line and the puck movement of Hutson and Dobson to get past that pressure before Washington's heavier forwards settle into the offensive zone.

Odds and Line Movement

Wednesday's market has not moved in a perfectly uniform direction across sportsbooks. Some feeds have quoted Washington as close as -114, while several major books list the Capitals in the mid-to-high -120s. That gap reflects differences in book prices and update times, not necessarily a clean movement from one universal opening number. Washington becomes considerably less interesting if the price pushes well beyond -125, because the Capitals' own defensive absences and recent losses keep the upset risk real.

Best Bet

Best Bet: Washington Capitals moneyline at -125 or better. The Capitals have enough scoring depth to challenge Montreal beyond its top pair, and the Canadiens' defensive injuries plus Dobes' uneven start create a plausible path to a home win. This is a cautious favorite selection rather than a case for laying any price. If Washington is significantly more expensive than -125, the matchup no longer offers the same risk-to-reward balance.
Prediction: Washington Capitals 4, Montreal Canadiens 3.
