Seattle Hoping for More Offensively

Seattle had a chance to win their opener but gave up the game-winning score with 1:34 remaining to wind up with the loss to the 49ers. The Seahawks look for a better offensive showing than they had in their opener as they head on the road here. Seattle trailed 7-0 after the opening quarter, led 10-7 at the half and after three quarters. The Seahawks took a 13-10 lead with 3:24 remaining but allowed San Francisco to drive 68 yards in seven plays for the winning points. Seattle was outgained 384-230 in total offense, gave up 24 first downs while picking up 14, and lost time of possession by a 37:58 to 22:02 margin. Both teams turned the ball over twice in the game.

Sam Darnold, in his Seahawks debut, completed 16 of 23 passes for 150 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He added two carries for 14 yards on the ground. Zach Charbonnet led the ground game with 12 carries for 47 yards and a score. Kenneth Walker III (10 carries, 20 yards) shared the workload for the Seahawks as the team finished with 26 carries for 84 yards in the contest. Jaxon Smith-Njigba reeled in nine passes for 124 yards but the team needs to get other guys involved as only Walker III (three catches, four yards) and Cooper Kupp (two grabs, 15 yards) were the only other players with more than one catch in the game. Jason Myers hit his lone extra point attempt and two of two field goal attempts, hitting from 43 and 48 yards.

Safety Nick Emmanwori (ankle) and cornerback Devon Witherspoon (knee) each missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Safety Julian Love (groin) and nose tackle Jarran Reed (back) were limited on Wednesday and missed practice on Thursday. On Friday, Emmanwori was ruled out while Weatherspoon is doubtful. Steelers Shooting for 2-0 Start

Pittsburgh was an offensive force in their season opener, though their defense failed to play up to par, which is a reversal from what we’re used to seeing. The Steelers hope to get their defense back on track as they take the field here. Against New York, Pittsburgh trailed 9-7 after one quarter, 19-17 at the half and 26-17 after three quarters. The teams traded the lead three times in the final stanza, with Chris Boswell’s 60-yard field goal with 1:03 remaining the difference. Pittsburgh was outgained 394-271 in total offense, gave up 23 first downs while picking up 19 and lost time of possession by a 34:43 to 25:17 margin. The Steelers did force the game’s lone turnover, which led to a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Aaron Rodgers was sharp in his Pittsburgh debut against his former team, completing 22 of 30 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns. He was sacked four times in the contest. The run game was uninspiring as the team ran the ball 20 times for just 53 yards. Jaylen Warren led the team with 11 carries for 37 yards in the game. Kenneth Gainwell (seven carries, 19 yards) and rookie Kaleb Johnson (one carry, -2 yards) are also in the mix. Jonnu Smith led the team with five receptions for 15 yards and a score. DK Metcalf (four catches, 83 yards), Calvin Austin III (four grabs, 70 yards, TD), Gainwell (three catches, four yards), Pat Freiermuth (three grabs, 28 yards) and Warren (two catches, 22 yards, TD) were also involved in the passing game. Boswell hit all four extra point attempts and both his field goal attempts, connecting from 56 and 60 yards, in the win.

Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon (knee), cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (hamstring) and safety DeShon Elliott (knee) have each been ruled out for this contest.

Seattle’s offense looked rather flat in their opener as outside of Smith-Njigba, no one stood out on that side of the ball. Having two key members of the secondary likely to miss the game is a big blow, especially given the fact that Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes last week against the Jets. Pittsburgh’s defense should get back up to speed and a 10 am PT start might take a toll on Seattle’s internal clocks. Metcalf is facing his old team so he'll want to leave an impression. The weather should be decent as game-time temperatures are expected to be in the low-80s with winds around five miles an hour. That’s enough to give the hosts the upper hand in this contest.
