San Francisco Giants vs Atlanta Braves Preview

The Atlanta Braves entered Wednesday at 46-25 and remained in first place in the NL East. Atlanta has dealt with several important injuries, but its pitching depth, power, and late-inning run prevention have allowed it to maintain one of baseball's best records.

The Braves are without Ronald Acuña Jr., who is on the injured list with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. Spencer Strider is also sidelined by right elbow inflammation, while Michael Harris II is day-to-day after leaving Tuesday's game with lower-back tightness. Atlanta did welcome Drake Baldwin back from an oblique injury, and the catcher immediately homered in his return Tuesday night.

San Francisco entered Wednesday at 29-43 and in fifth place in the NL West. The Giants have struggled to turn competitive stretches into consistent wins, but their lineup still includes dangerous hitters such as Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, Luis Arraez, Bryce Eldridge, and Jung Hoo Lee.

The teams must also complete Tuesday's suspended game earlier Wednesday. San Francisco led 3-2 when rain stopped play in the second inning, with the game scheduled to resume at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The split schedule places additional pressure on each club's pitching staff and bench before the regularly scheduled night game.

Starting Pitchers and Pitching Matchup

The Giants will recall left-hander Carson Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento for the nightcap. Whisenhunt is 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts across 69 innings in Triple-A this season. His strikeout production and improved command earned him another opportunity in San Francisco's rotation.

Whisenhunt made five major-league starts in 2025, finishing 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts across 23.1 innings. He allowed 13 earned runs during that brief stint and was more vulnerable against right-handed hitters. Atlanta can counter with several right-handed bats, including Austin Riley, Mauricio Dubón, Ozzie Albies, and Ha-Seong Kim.

The Braves will start right-hander JR Ritchie. The 22-year-old enters at 1-1 with a 3.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts across 30.2 major-league innings. Ritchie has allowed 23 hits and 13 earned runs through six appearances, five of which have been starts.

Ritchie's primary concern has been command. He has issued 18 walks, creating unnecessary traffic despite limiting opponents to fewer than one hit per inning. San Francisco hitters have produced one of baseball's lowest walk rates against right-handed pitching, however, which could help Ritchie avoid the extended innings that have driven up his pitch count.

Game Thesis: Atlanta has the stronger overall roster and a favorable home matchup against a pitcher making his first major-league appearance of the season. Whisenhunt's Triple-A results are encouraging, but he remains relatively unproven against major-league hitting. Ritchie also carries risk because of his walk rate, making Atlanta the preferred side while creating enough scoring potential to consider the Over.

⭐ Best Bet - Moneyline Pick: Atlanta Braves (-130)

The Braves moneyline is the strongest selection. Atlanta has the better lineup, the deeper bullpen, and the more stable current major-league starter. Ritchie has held opponents to 23 hits in 30.2 innings and has allowed three earned runs or fewer in five of his six appearances.

Whisenhunt has performed well at Triple-A, but his previous major-league sample included a 5.01 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. The Braves have enough right-handed hitting to test him early, while Matt Olson and Drake Baldwin give Atlanta legitimate power from the left side.

The unusual split schedule introduces more uncertainty than a standard matchup, but Atlanta has the roster depth to manage two games more effectively. At -130, the moneyline provides a reasonable price on the substantially stronger full-season team.

Spread Pick: Atlanta Braves -1.5 (+147)

Atlanta's run line offers plus-money value for bettors expecting Whisenhunt's major-league adjustment to remain difficult. The Giants left-hander has produced strong strikeout numbers in Triple-A, but he allowed 13 earned runs across five MLB starts last season and now faces one of the National League's deepest offenses.

San Francisco's pitching staff has also struggled with walks and first-pitch execution throughout the season. If Atlanta forces Whisenhunt into an elevated pitch count, the Braves can reach the Giants bullpen early and create separation in the middle innings.

The run line carries more risk because Ritchie's command can keep San Francisco within striking distance. Atlanta -1.5 is the higher-upside extension of the moneyline pick, but the straight moneyline remains the safer market.

Total Pick: Over 9.5 (+110)

The Over 9.5 is supported by the uncertainty surrounding both starting pitchers and the demands of completing two games on Wednesday. Whisenhunt has limited major-league experience, while Ritchie's 18 walks in 30.2 innings give San Francisco opportunities to create scoring chances without stringing together several hits.

Atlanta has enough power to do most of the work against Whisenhunt and the Giants bullpen. Olson entered Wednesday with 20 home runs, while Riley, Baldwin, Dubón, and Albies give the Braves multiple paths to create extra-base damage.

San Francisco can contribute against Ritchie if his command remains inconsistent. A game in the range of 6-4 or 7-3 would clear the number, making the plus-money Over playable alongside the Atlanta side.

Top Player Prop Picks

Matt Chapman Over 0.5 Hits (-174) Chapman is one of San Francisco's most dangerous right-handed hitters and should receive multiple opportunities against Ritchie. The Atlanta starter has issued 18 walks and allowed 23 hits through 30.2 innings, creating traffic even when he has limited overall scoring. Chapman can cash this prop against Ritchie or an Atlanta reliever later in the game.

Matt Olson Over 0.5 Hits (-240) Olson entered Wednesday with 75 hits, 20 home runs, 19 doubles, and an .894 OPS. Whisenhunt creates a left-on-left matchup to begin the game, but Olson has enough power to punish a mistake and should also receive plate appearances against San Francisco's bullpen. His central role in Atlanta's offense gives him several opportunities to record at least one hit.

Mauricio Dubón Over 0.5 Hits (-240) Dubón provides Atlanta with a favorable right-handed matchup against Whisenhunt. He entered Wednesday batting .371 with 99 hits across 267 at-bats and recorded an RBI single before Tuesday's game was suspended. Dubón's contact ability and position near the top of the Atlanta order make him the strongest Braves hit prop in the nightcap.
