Pirates Getting Stronger Production Throughout the Lineup

Pittsburgh is coming off a 5-2 loss to San Francisco, but had been playing solid baseball entering the series opener. The Pirates won back-to-back road games against Arizona before arriving in San Francisco and have continued to remain competitive because of balanced production at the plate and on the mound.

The Pirates are hitting .245 with a .332 on-base percentage and .384 slugging percentage, producing 187 runs on 328 hits. Brandon Lowe leads the team with 10 home runs and 23 RBI while carrying a .563 slugging percentage. Oneil Cruz has added nine home runs, 28 RBI, and 13 stolen bases, giving Pittsburgh production through both power and speed. Nick Gonzales is batting .306 with a .377 OBP, while Bryan Reynolds owns a .395 on-base percentage and 32 walks. The Pirates have totaled 42 home runs and continue to generate offense consistently through the middle of the lineup.

Pittsburgh has also been effective on the mound with a 3.74 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while holding opponents to a .222 batting average. The Pirates have recorded 353 strikeouts through 39 games, one of the stronger totals in the National League. However, the staff has also issued 143 walks, which have occasionally created unnecessary pressure innings despite the strong overall ERA.

Giants Trying to Build Momentum After Series-Opening Victory

San Francisco opened this series with a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh after losing three of its previous four games. The Giants had struggled offensively during the Padres series, scoring just nine total runs across three games before responding with improved production Friday night.

The Giants are hitting .241 with a .284 on-base percentage and .358 slugging percentage, producing 120 runs on 307 hits. Luis Arraez leads the lineup with a .314 batting average and 43 hits, while Casey Schmitt has hit six home runs with 18 RBI and a .529 slugging percentage. Jung Hoo Lee is batting .270, and Heliot Ramos has added 16 RBI. San Francisco has struggled to create consistent power production overall, with only 24 home runs through 38 games, one of the lower totals in the National League.

Pitching has been more reliable than the offense. The Giants enter with a 3.91 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while allowing a .235 opponent batting average. San Francisco has recorded 303 strikeouts and allowed 38 home runs this season. The pitching staff has generally kept games manageable, but offensive inconsistency has made it difficult for the team to capitalize on quality starts.

Injuries: Harrison Bader, 10-Day IL, Sam Hentges, 15-Day IL, Logan Webb, Day-To-Day, Daniel Susac, 10-Day IL, Erik Miller, 15-Day IL

Pitching Matchup

Pittsburgh Pirates – Bubba Chandler

Chandler is 1-4 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 34.0 innings. The right-hander has allowed 25 hits with 31 strikeouts and 26 walks while giving up five home runs. In his most recent start against Arizona, Chandler allowed two earned runs over five innings.

San Francisco Giants – Tyler Mahle

Mahle is 1-4 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through 36.0 innings. The right-hander has allowed 37 hits with 34 strikeouts and 18 walks while surrendering six home runs. Mahle threw 5.1 scoreless innings against Tampa Bay in his last outing.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs San Francisco Giants Spread Pick

The Pittsburgh Pirates have the advantage due to stronger overall offensive production and more consistent results over the last two weeks. Pittsburgh has generated more power throughout the lineup and owns better overall pitching numbers entering this matchup. While Mahle is coming off a strong start, San Francisco’s offense has struggled to consistently support its pitching staff. With Pittsburgh producing more reliably at the plate, the Pirates are in a favorable position to win.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs San Francisco Giants Over/Under Pick

This matchup leans toward the under because both teams have relied more on pitching than explosive offense recently. The Giants continue to rank near the bottom of the National League in home runs, while Pittsburgh has played several lower-scoring games during its recent road trip. If both starters can limit early damage, scoring opportunities may remain limited throughout the game.
