Donnie Baseball has the Phillies rolling
After getting off to a 9-19 start, the Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson and replaced him with interim manager Don Mattingly. Since Mattingly took over, the Phillies have gone 28-12 and are currently in the second Wild Card position in the National League. On Saturday, Philadelphia is expected to start Aaron Nola (3-4, 5.86 ERA, 1.45 WHIP). All three of Nola’s wins this season have come on the road, where he is 3-3 with a 5.59 ERA. However, Nola has shown improvement with the team as the Phillies have won six of his last seven starts.
Offensively, Philadelphia is towards the bottom of MLB in batting average, runs scored, and on-base percentage, but they are 9th in home runs. Brandon Marsh is 5th in baseball with a .326 batting average, and Kyle Schwarber leads the way with 24 home runs and 42 RBI.

Brewers leading their division
The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the most consistent teams in the National League this season and currently own the top record in the NL. Milwaukee got off to a solid but not dominant start, sitting at 13-13 through its first 26 games, but since then, the Brewers have gone 28-12 and have looked like one of the most complete teams in baseball.
The Brewers enter this matchup on a two-game losing streak after dropping the final two games of their series against the Athletics in Las Vegas. That snapped what had been a four-game winning streak, so Milwaukee will be looking to bounce back quickly and avoid letting a short skid turn into something bigger.
Milwaukee is expected to start Shane Drohan, which likely points to more of a bullpen-style game for the Brewers. That is not necessarily a major concern, as Milwaukee’s bullpen has been one of the better units in baseball, ranking eighth with a 3.43 ERA. The Brewers’ pitching staff overall has been excellent, ranking near the top five in ERA, strikeouts, and home runs allowed.
Offensively, Milwaukee has also been strong across the board. The Brewers rank fifth in batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, and stolen bases, giving them one of the more balanced attacks in the league. Jake Bauers leads the team with 12 home runs and 43 RBI, while William Contreras has been one of the most reliable bats in the lineup with 42 RBI and a team-best .285 batting average.
Phillies at Brewers Predictions
Phillies at Brewers Side Pick:
- Phillies ML +119 ( 4 units)
The Brewers held a massive pitching advantage on Friday night, but the Phillies matched up much better in this matchup. Active Brewers are only batting .228 lifetime off of Nola, and he is 7-3 with a 3.09 ERA in his career against them. Milwaukee's bullpen has been involved in some tough battles recently, and the Phillies have been playing as well as any team in baseball. With Aaron Nola pitching like an ace recently, take the plus money with Philadelphia.
Phillies at Brewers Side Total:
- Under 8.5 (3 units)
The Phillies have a potent lineup, but despite the winning record, they have not been an offensive powerhouse, which has resulted in a 25-33 over/under record. On the other hand, the Brewers' recent offensive and pitching numbers have been skewed by their trips to Colorado and Las Vegas. With both bullpens solid overall. I like the under.
