Angels Fall to Fifth
The scar has still not healed for the Los Angeles Angels, as they lost one of the best players in baseball history when Shohei Ohtani left for the Dodgers. They will be reminded of that fact yet again in this series, as they have to take on Ohtani in his new home. The Angels need wins in any way possible, as they are digging a hole for themselves in the bottom of the AL West. They are 3.5 games behind Houston who sits in fourth, and a full nine games behind the division leading Mariners.
The Angels had the day off on Thursday after a three game series with the Rockies where they lost two of three. Their lone victory in the set came on Wednesday, as Vaughn Grissom had a home run and three RBIs to help lead the Angels to an 11-4 win. Grissom is their second baseman who just hit his fourth home run of the year to go with 27 RBIs and a .246 batting average. Mike Trout continues to be an offensive force, he now plays the majority of his games as the DH while batting second in the order while providing a team high 14 home runs paired with 31 RBIs. Jo Adell leads the team with 35 RBIs and another nine home runs as their right fielder.
Jack Kochanowicz will make his 13th start of the season as a 25-year old right hander. He has a 2-4 record and a 5.23 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio is 46 to 35, while giving up six home runs on the season. In his last start, Kochanowicz only lasted 2.1 innings, giving up three runs to the Tigers in a loss.

Dodgers Split in Arizona
The Los Angeles Dodgers are at the top of the NL West, but that does not make then untouchable, as they just split a four game series against Arizona. The Diamondbacks are in second in the division, with Los Angeles holding a 6.5-game lead on the field. San Diego is still in striking distance as they are seven games back, but San Francisco and Colorado look to already be playing themselves out of contention for a division crown.
The Dodgers played on Thursday, and lost a tight 3-2 in Arizona. The game was tied going into the bottom of the ninth, but Ketel Marte his a walk off home run to end the game. The top bats for Los Angeles were quiet, as Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages were all hitless, and Shohei Ohtani sat the game out after pitching on Wednesday. Ohtani has the team's best batting average at .301, and has 10 home runs and 33 RBIs at the plate. Pages leads all of Major League Baseball in RBIs with 31, and is just edged out by teammate Max Muncy for the most home runs on the club, as Muncy has 14 and Pages has 13.
Yamamoto will make his 12th start of the season as a 27-year old right hander. He has a 5-4 record, with a 2.86 ERA. He has a strong strikeout to walk ratio at 69 to 15, and has allowed nine home runs so far. In his last start, Yamamoto pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits in a win over the Phillies.
Angels vs. Dodgers Picks and Predictions
Runline pick for Angels vs. Dodgers
- Dodgers -1.5 (5 units)
The Dodgers already have the more powerful offense, but this pitching mismatch is the main reason to lay the extra run with the Dodgers. Yamamoto has been one of the top arms for the Dodgers all season, and has an imposing 69-15 strikeout to walk ratio. He has not given up two or more runs in an of his last three starts, totaling only two earned runs over his last 19 innings pitched. The same has not been true for Kochanowicz, as he has allowed three or more earned runs in each of his last five starts, with the Angels losing four of those five games. The Dodgers will roll here.
Take the Dodgers on the runline.
Over/Under Pick for Angels vs. Dodgers
- Over (4 units)
The Dodgers will put up big numbers here. As documented above, Kochanowicz has given up at least three runs in each of his last five starts, including the last time he faced the Dodgers where he gave up six earned runs. The Dodgers recently put up nine runs on the Phillies, and also expect Ohtani to be back in the lineup after sitting out the final game last series. The Angels put up 11 runs in their last game against Colorado, so they will still be able to provide enough run support to send this over the total.
Take the over.
