Cleveland Guardians vs Tampa Bay Rays ALCS Game 1 Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Monday October 12 2026

By: Alex MacMillan Published 10/12/2026, 11:25 AM ET

Cleveland barely had time to celebrate its Division Series comeback before facing a completely different problem Monday night. The Guardians erased a 2-0 deficit against Chicago and won Game 5 on Saturday, but now they travel to Tampa Bay to face a Rays team that swept the Yankees and has been resting since Wednesday.

That rest advantage is real, and so is Tampa Bay's starting-pitching edge. Drew Rasmussen gets Game 1 for the Rays after dominating Cleveland during the regular season and carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his ALDS start. Cleveland counters with Foster Griffin, who was excellent in relief against Chicago but is being asked to give the Guardians length after a taxing five-game series.

The market reflects that mismatch. Tampa Bay is -163, Cleveland is +150 and the total is only 6.5. The Rays deserve to be favored, but the price creates a different question: can a Cleveland team that has repeatedly won close games keep Game 1 competitive enough to make +150 worth taking?

Cleveland Guardians vs Tampa Bay Rays ALCS Game 1 Preview

Tampa Bay dominated the season series, winning five of six meetings and outscoring Cleveland 20-8. The final numbers look one-sided, but the individual games were tighter than the aggregate score suggests. Five of the six were decided by three runs or fewer, and three were decided by a single run.

That matters because Cleveland's entire postseason identity has been built around surviving narrow games. The Guardians looked finished after losing the first two games of the ALDS at home, then won three straight behind improved offense and a pitching staff that continued to generate strikeouts in big spots.

José Ramírez was the catalyst. After going hitless in Games 1 and 2, he went 5-for-12 with four extra-base hits, seven RBIs and five runs scored over the final three games. Jo Adell also improved as the series went along, while Petey Halpin provided two doubles in Game 5 after being inserted into the lineup.

Cleveland needs that version of its offense immediately because Rasmussen presents one of the hardest matchups it could draw.

Guardians vs Rays Game 1 Odds

  • Cleveland Guardians +150
  • Tampa Bay Rays -163
  • Full-game total: 6.5
  • Date: Monday, October 12, 2026

  • Probable Pitchers: Foster Griffin vs Drew Rasmussen

Drew Rasmussen Gives Tampa Bay the Early Advantage

Rasmussen dominated Cleveland when he saw this lineup in July, throwing seven scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and nine strikeouts. His most recent outing was even better. He took a no-hitter into the eighth against the Yankees and finished with 10 strikeouts.

He also gets the benefit of extra rest after Tampa Bay swept New York in three games. That allows Kevin Cash to enter the series with both his starter and bullpen fresh, a meaningful advantage against a Cleveland club that had to use its pitching staff aggressively through Saturday night.

The Guardians' challenge is to avoid letting Rasmussen dictate the first five innings. Steven Kwan and Ramírez have to create early baserunners, and Cleveland's hitters need to make Rasmussen work rather than expanding the zone against his command.

If Tampa Bay carries a lead into the later innings, its bullpen is set up well. Bryan Baker saved all three ALDS games, while Tyler Wells did not pitch in the series and Kevin Kelly, Cam Booser and the rest of the relief group enter with limited recent workload.

Foster Griffin Has to Give Cleveland Length

Griffin earned this start with his work against Chicago. He struck out seven over 2 2/3 innings in relief during Game 3 and now gets the ball because Gavin Williams and Parker Messick are not available to start Game 1 on normal rest.

Cleveland does not necessarily need Griffin to match Rasmussen inning for inning. It needs him to avoid an early deficit and reduce the number of outs Stephen Vogt must cover with a bullpen that was heavily involved in the Division Series.

That bullpen has pitched well, posting a 2.67 postseason ERA with 39 strikeouts in 27 innings. The concern is workload rather than performance. Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin, Erik Sabrowski and Cade Smith remain a formidable late-game group if Griffin can get the game there without forcing Vogt into emergency moves in the middle innings.

Tampa Bay will test that plan in several ways. Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda set the table, Junior Caminero supplies the middle-order power and the Rays are comfortable winning without waiting for a home run. They bunt, run and move runners, which makes avoiding free baserunners particularly important for Griffin.

The supporting numbers explain why Cleveland can still be considered at a large underdog price. The Guardians are 46-37 on the road for +12.95 units, showing that they have been able to produce betting profit away from Progressive Field.

Tampa Bay, however, has been outstanding at home at 57-26 for +19.35 units. That is why this is not a fade of the Rays or an argument that Cleveland owns the better matchup. Tampa Bay has the rested staff, the stronger Game 1 starter and home-field advantage.

The wager is about whether -163 is asking too much in a matchup between two teams that have repeatedly played close games.

Best Bet - Cleveland Guardians ML (+150)

Tampa Bay is the more likely winner, but Cleveland +150 is the more attractive wager. The Guardians have a bullpen capable of keeping a one-run game intact, Ramírez enters the ALCS swinging his best bat of the postseason and five of the six regular-season meetings stayed within three runs.

Rasmussen creates the largest obstacle. If he repeats what he did against Cleveland in July or what he did to New York in the Division Series, the Guardians could spend the entire night trying to catch up.

At +150, however, Cleveland is being compensated for accepting that pitching disadvantage. Griffin only needs to keep the game manageable long enough for the Guardians' high-leverage relievers and improved middle of the order to have a chance to decide it late.

Tampa Bay deserves respect, but the number is large enough to take the other side of what has usually been a close matchup.

Game Thesis: Tampa Bay owns the clear starting-pitching and rest advantages, but Cleveland has survived exactly this kind of low-scoring game throughout October. With Ramírez hot, the bullpen pitching well and the Guardians receiving +150, Cleveland offers enough upside to back the underdog in Game 1.

Final Prediction

Prediction: Cleveland Guardians 3, Tampa Bay Rays 2
