The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees wrap up their rivalry series on Sunday in another regular-season battle between two of MLB’s most recognizable franchises. Boston grabbed the opener 5-3 on Friday before Saturday’s game was postponed, setting up a Sunday matchup with both teams looking to make a statement.

The Yankees enter at 37-26 and sit just one game out of first place in the AL East, but they are dealing with the absence of Aaron Judge and have dropped three of their last four games. As for the Red Sox, they remain in the basement of the division at 27-35, but they have won four of their last six and are trying to build momentum.

Ranger Suarez gets the ball for Boston, while Cam Schlittler counters for New York in what should be a tightly watched rivalry matchup.

Red Sox going for the short sweep

The Red Sox have had an inconsistent season overall, but they come into this matchup playing better baseball than their record suggests. Boston has won four of its last six games, including a 5-3 win over the Yankees in the series opener on Friday. That type of win matters for a team trying to climb out of the bottom of the AL East, especially against a division rival that has been ahead of them in the standings for most of the year.

Offensively, Wilson Contreras has been Boston’s most reliable bat, leading the team with a .299 batting average, 13 home runs, and 38 RBI. The Red Sox will need production from the middle of the order here, especially with the wind expected to blow out and scoring conditions potentially favorable.

The concern for Boston is Ranger Suarez’s recent form. His season numbers are still respectable at 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts across 58.2 innings, but his recent outings have raised some red flags. Suarez has allowed nine earned runs and 14 hits over his last 10 innings, which is not ideal heading into a rivalry matchup against a Yankees lineup that still has dangerous bats even without Aaron Judge. He also struggled against New York earlier this season, allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings.

Yankees going for spilt

The Yankees enter this matchup in a much stronger position than Boston in the standings, sitting at 37-26 and just one game out of first place in the AL East. However, New York has hit a bit of a rough patch, losing three of its last four games. The biggest issue right now is the absence of Aaron Judge, who is currently injured. Any lineup would miss that type of power and presence, and the Yankees are no different.

That said, New York still has plenty of offensive firepower. Ben Rice has stepped up in a major way, hitting .305 with 18 home runs and 45 RBI. His production gives the Yankees a legitimate middle-of-the-order threat even without Judge, and he will be important in this matchup against Ranger Suarez, who has struggled in recent starts.

On the mound, Cam Schlittler gives the Yankees a major advantage. He enters at 7-3 with a 1.89 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 84 strikeouts over 76.1 innings. Those are excellent numbers, and he has allowed only four home runs all season. His recent start against Cleveland was not sharp, as he allowed four earned runs and five hits over 4.1 innings in a 9-4 loss, but his overall body of work is still outstanding.

Schlittler has also handled the Red Sox well, allowing just one earned run across his last two starts against Boston, covering 16 innings with 17 strikeouts. That history gives New York a clear edge on the mound.

Red Sox at Yankees Predictions

Red Sox at Yankees Side Play:

  • Yankees ML -171 (3 units)

The price is not cheap, but the Yankees are still the side I trust more in this spot. New York has the better overall roster, the better record, and the stronger starting pitcher on the mound. Even without Aaron Judge, the Yankees still have enough offense to do damage, especially with Ben Rice producing at a high level.

Cam Schlittler is the biggest reason to back New York. His season numbers are excellent, and he has already shown he can control this Boston lineup. He has allowed only one earned run over his last 16 innings against the Red Sox with 17 strikeouts in those outings. That is hard to ignore.

Boston has played better lately, but the Red Sox have not been consistent enough this season to trust against a Yankees team trying to stay near the top of the division. Ranger Suarez’s recent struggles also tilt this matchup toward New York.

Red Sox at Yankees Total Play:

  • Over 8.0 (4 units)

The head-to-head trends point toward the under, with only one of the last 10 meetings between these teams going over the total, but this looks like a spot to go the other way. The pitching matchup looks strong on paper, but both starters enter with some recent concerns.

Ranger Suarez has allowed nine earned runs and 14 hits over his last 10 innings, and he gave up four earned runs in 4.2 innings the last time he faced the Yankees. Cam Schlittler has been outstanding overall, but he is coming off a rough outing against Cleveland where he allowed four earned runs in 4.1 innings.

With the wind blowing out at 14 miles per hour, conditions should help the bats. In a rivalry game with enough offensive talent on both sides, the over has value.
