Boston Trying to Climb Out of AL East Cellar

Boston had won three of their previous four before getting hammered in the rubber game of their series with the Orioles Thursday. The Red Sox entered Friday 26-35 and sat in the basement of the AL East, 11 games behind the Rays for the top spot. Against the Orioles Thursday, Boston gave up six runs in the top of the first and never recovered. The Red Sox finished with seven hits with Willson Contreras (run, two RBI) the lone player with two. Contreras (his 12th of the year) went deep in the loss. Brayan Bello (2-6) took the loss as he allowed eight runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts over five innings. He was sent to Triple-A Friday.

Ranger Suarez gets the ball for his 12th start of the season for the Red Sox in this contest. He is 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA, a 1.159 WHIP, 19 walks and 57 strikeouts over 58.2 innings of work this season. Suarez didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against Cleveland on the road Sunday.  He threw five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in a 9-4 Boston victory. In his last three starts, Suarez is 0-1 with a 6.28 ERA, a 1.81 WHIP, eight walks and 17 strikeouts over 14.1 innings of work. Suarez is 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, one walk and eight strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work in two career appearances, one start, at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees Battling for AL East Lead

Will Warren is on the bump as he makes his 13th start of the year for the Yankees in this contest. Red Sox vs. Yankees Pick

Moneyline Pick for Red Sox vs. Yankees

  • Yankees -135 (4 units)

Boston has sputtered all year long and issues with their pitching staff is a big reason why. Suarez has been decent but not great so far this season.  He’s averaging just 5.1 innings a start, which isn’t what Boston was hoping for when they handed him a hefty contract in the offseason. New York has their own issues with Aaron Judge on the IL with a stress fracture in his first rib. He’ll be sidelined for four to six weeks, and the Yankees need to get other guys to step up and contribute in the interim. Warren has pitched well this season and the Yankees are tough at home. Give New York the advantage in this contest.

Over/Under Pick for Red Sox vs. Yankees

  • Over 8 (4 units)

Boston went into Friday having seen the under post a 32-27-2 mark in their 61 games this season. The Red Sox are 25th in the majors in runs per game with 3.98 on the season and they have an average total of 8.07 runs per contest. On the road, Boston averages 4.70 runs per game and has an average total of 8.77 runs per game away from Fenway Park. New York has seen the under hit in 32 of their 62 games, with two pushes, this season entering Friday. The Yankees are fifth in the majors by averaging 5.08 runs per game though they allow 3.58 runs per game, giving them an average of 8.66 runs per game. New York puts up a robust 5.45 runs per game at home, while allowing four runs per game, giving them an average total of 9.45 runs per contest. With both teams capable of doing some damage at the plate, take the over in this contest.
