Cleveland Form & Recent Results

Cleveland heads into this matchup with a little momentum after winning their most recent game, although the bigger picture shows a team that’s been pretty inconsistent lately. Before Friday, the Guardians had lost three of their last five games, including a setback against the Reds in Cincinnati and a pair of losses to the Rays down in St. Petersburg. That recent stretch highlights the up-and-down nature of their play, especially on the offensive side. where they’ve struggled to string together steady production even when the pitching has kept them in games.

They did, however, put together one of their better all-around performances in a 6–1 road win over Cincinnati on Wednesday. First baseman Kyle Manzardo was a key contributor, going 1-for-3 but making his opportunities count with two walks, a home run, a run scored, and two RBI. On the mound, Joey Cantillo was sharp in his four innings of work, giving up four hits and no runs while walking one and striking out eight. Cleveland’s lineup finished with 12 hits, one homer, and 17 total bases, which is the kind of output they’ve been searching for more consistently. Manzardo now leads the team with 13 home runs on the season, while Angel Martinez, Chase DeLauter, and Rhys Hoskins are right behind him with 11 apiece. DeLauter has been their most productive run driver with 51 RBI and has also been their most consistent hitter overall, leading the Guardians with a .280 batting average. Even so, Cleveland’s recent results show how much pressure is on them to score, as they’ve allowed just 2.4 runs per game in their last five on average, yet the offense has still been an issue, and across their last 15 games they’re only 7–8.

Arizona Form & Recent Results

Arizona comes into this matchup feeling a bit better after putting together a two-game winning streak, but it hasn’t been a completely smooth stretch overall. Before Friday, the Diamondbacks had actually lost three of their last five games, so there have still been some bumps along the way. One of those defeats was against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, and the other two came on the road against the Nationals in Washington. Even with those setbacks, Arizona has shown they can respond quickly, and lately they’ve been doing enough to keep themselves moving in the right direction.

A good example of that bounce-back came Wednesday in their 3–0 win over Pittsburgh. Catcher Gabriel Moreno played a big role, going 1-for-3 at the plate, working a walk, and making his one hit count by sending it out of the park. He finished the night with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. On the mound, Eduardo Rodriguez was in control from start to finish, throwing eight scoreless innings while giving up only five hits, issuing just one walk, and striking out two. Offensively, Arizona didn’t pile up a huge number of hits as they had six total, but they were efficient, adding one home run and finishing with 11 total bases. Over the course of the season, Ketel Marte has been one of their key bats, leading the team with 19 home runs and also pacing them in RBIs with 61. Corbin Carroll has provided plenty of power as well, sitting second on the team with 15 homers. Meanwhile, Ildemaro Vargas has been their most consistent pure hitter by average, leading the Diamondbacks at .275. Looking at their recent form, Arizona has allowed about five runs per game over their last five, and they’ve put themselves in a solid spot overall with a 10–5 record across their last 15 games.

Key Stats

  • Arizona’s Ketel Marte this season: 19 HRs, 61 RBI, .253 AVG
  • Cleveland’s Chase DeLauter this season: 11 HRs, 51 RBI, .280 AVG

Arizona vs. Cleveland Picks and Prediction

Both the Diamondbacks and the Guardians are right in the middle of the playoff race, but their paths look a little different. Cleveland is pushing to take control of its division, while Arizona is trying to do enough down the stretch to grab a wild-card spot. On the mound, the Diamondbacks are set to start left-hander Kohl Drake. He’s only logged nine innings so far this season, and that limited sample has come with a 5.00 ERA. He’ll be looking to settle in and pick up his first win of the year. The Guardians will counter with Parker Messick, who’s been much more established this season, coming in at 8–6 with a strong 2.59 ERA. Final Score Prediction, Cleveland Guardians win 6-5.
