Friday night's Norfolk State Spartans vs Virginia Cavaliers picks feature a rested No. 25 Virginia team facing an FCS opponent playing its second straight road game. Virginia opened the season with a 34-8 win over NC State and then had a bye, while Norfolk State followed a 56-0 opening win with a 31-10 loss at Old Dominion. The Cavaliers are favored by roughly 45 points, but the total in the mid-50s offers a cleaner way to attack a matchup where Virginia can dominate without needing to play fast for four quarters.

Norfolk State Spartans vs Virginia Cavaliers Preview

Virginia's opener established a physical identity immediately. The Cavaliers beat NC State 34-8, controlled possession for more than 38 minutes and rushed for 258 yards. Quarterback Beau Pribula accounted for 155 passing yards and 110 rushing yards, giving Tony Elliott an offense that can create numbers advantages in the run game without needing high-volume passing.

That style is particularly difficult for Norfolk State because the Spartans had trouble controlling quarterback movement in last week's loss at Old Dominion. Head coach Michael Vick specifically pointed to the problems created when Old Dominion's quarterback broke contain, and Virginia now presents a more talented version of that challenge with Pribula.

Norfolk State's own quarterback usage is a concern. Deljay Bailey completed 14 of 20 passes for only 94 yards against Old Dominion and carried the ball 21 times, absorbing too many hits in the process. The Spartans produced 220 total yards, committed three turnovers and scored only 10 points despite possessing the ball for more than 32 minutes. Against Virginia's defense, Bailey cannot be asked to create the entire offense with his legs.

The good news for Norfolk State is that Jalyn Daniels showed real rushing explosiveness, gaining 84 yards on 11 carries. If the Spartans can use Daniels to keep Bailey out of obvious passing situations, they can at least consume clock and reduce Virginia's total number of possessions. That is more important to the total than it is to the outright result.

Virginia is also getting healthier. Linebacker Kam Robinson has been cleared to make his 2026 debut after recovering from last year's knee injury. The Cavaliers remain without receivers Daze Newton-Short and Rico Flores Jr., however, which reduces some of the incentive to chase explosive passing production in a game where they can win through the run and defense.

The schedule is another major edge for Virginia. The Cavaliers have had nearly two weeks to prepare since beating NC State on August 29. Norfolk State played last Saturday at Old Dominion and now travels again on a short Friday turnaround. The Spartans are not crossing time zones, but the recovery and preparation gap still favors the home team.

The betting market has stayed close to the opener on the spread. Virginia opened around -44.5 and has generally traded between -44.5 and -45.5. The total is more interesting. Early numbers around 54.5 dipped into the 53.5 range before rebounding to 54.5 or 55. That movement leaves enough room for a game in which Virginia scores in the low 40s and Norfolk State remains in single digits.

Matchup Breakdown

Virginia should own the line of scrimmage. Pribula's running ability forces Norfolk State to defend an extra gap, and the Cavaliers can keep the offense simple by leaning on the same rushing structure that overwhelmed NC State. The favorite does not need to throw aggressively to create separation.

Norfolk State's goal should be to run Daniels, use quick throws and avoid asking Bailey to take repeated deep drops. Old Dominion pressured the Spartans into inefficient offense, and Virginia has more speed across the front. Long third downs create both sack risk and turnover risk.

The total is also protected by Virginia's likely fourth-quarter incentives. A 35-7 lead would allow Elliott to reduce Pribula's designed runs, rotate offensive players and emphasize clock management. That is precisely the kind of script that can produce a comfortable favorite win without pushing the game into the 60s.

Turnovers are the main threat. Norfolk State gave the ball away three times last week. If the Spartans repeat that and give Virginia short fields, the Cavaliers can score 45 or more without needing much offensive yardage. Clean ball security is essential to the Under.

Game Thesis: Virginia should dominate the run game, field position and defensive matchup, but the Cavaliers can do that in a controlled game. Norfolk State's offense is unlikely to contribute enough scoring to justify a total in the mid-50s, and Virginia's receiver absences plus a likely second-half substitution pattern make the Under cleaner than laying roughly six and a half touchdowns.

Norfolk State Spartans vs Virginia Cavaliers Best Bet - Total: Under 54.5 (-105)

Under 54.5 is the preferred wager because Norfolk State's scoring ceiling is the central question. The Spartans managed 10 points against Old Dominion and now face a better defense after a short turnaround. If Virginia holds Norfolk State below 10, the Cavaliers would need to score into the mid-40s to threaten the Over.

The current number is still playable at 54.5. A move below 52 would change the calculation because one defensive touchdown or late score would become much more damaging.

The failure condition is a turnover avalanche. Norfolk State cannot repeatedly give Virginia the ball inside the 40. If the Spartans force the Cavaliers to assemble full-field drives, the clock should work in the Under's favor.

Norfolk State Spartans vs Virginia Cavaliers Spread Pick: Norfolk State +45 (-110)

Norfolk State +45 is a secondary lean because the Cavaliers do not need to maintain offensive urgency after building a large lead. The Spartans can lose 42-7 and still cover comfortably.

The risk is that Norfolk State's protection breaks down and Virginia creates defensive or special-teams points. The underdog is playable only at 44 or better, where the backdoor and substitution cushion remain meaningful.

Prediction: Virginia 42, Norfolk State 7
