Duke Blue Devils (3-2) vs. California Golden Bears (4-1) 

The Duke Blue Devils head to California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, CA, on Saturday night to square off against the California Golden Bears in the ACC showdown, and we’ve got you covered with our Duke vs. California prediction.

Duke and California lock horns for the first time since 1963. The Blue Devils are 2.5-point road favorites with a total of 56.5 points.

Duke eyes its third straight W                                                

The Duke Blue Devils (3-2; 2-3 ATS; 4-1 O/U) are coming off a 38-3 dismantling of Syracuse in Week 5. It was their second win on the spin, as the Blue Devils outlasted NC State 45-33 in Week 4. The Blue Devils have covered the spread on both occasions, beating the Wolfpack as 3-point home favorites and smashing the Orange as 4-point road favorites.

Duke overcame a 13-point deficit in Week 4. The Wolfpack outgained the Blue Devils 535-418 in total yards, but Duke won the turnover battle 4-0. Senior RB Anderson Castle led the way for Duke, posting 92 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries, while sophomore QB Darian Mensah threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, Duke outgained Syracuse 503-314 in total yards and won the turnover battle 3-0. Mensah completed 22 of his 28 passing attempts, tossing for 268 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman RB Nate Sheppard posted 15 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

"The defense looked more like the Duke defense today," Duke coach Manny Diaz said last week. "We know that we had played as well as we could in the first four weeks, but the pride of those guys got us going. Weaver with the big interception really got the momentum going to win turnovers again. That's the pathway for victory."

Back in Week 2, Duke suffered a 45-19 home defeat against Illinois. A week later, the Blue Devils lost at Tulane 34-27. Now, the Blue Devils are yielding 26.4 points per game (87th in the country) on 139.6 rushing yards (66th) and 254.2 passing yards (109th).

Duke is scoring 34.8 points per game (tied for 44th) on 152.8 rushing yards (76th) and 319.0 passing yards (14th). Mensah has thrown for 1,573 yards, 13 touchdowns, and two interceptions thus far, while Sheppard and Castle have combined for 767 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns. Senior wideout Cooper Barkate leads the receiving corps with 21 catches for 409 yards and three scores.

Cal has had one bad outing                                                

The California Golden Bears (4-1; 3-2 ATS; 1-4 O/U) put an end to their three-game winning streak in Week 4. After beating Oregon State 34-15, Texas Southern 35-3, and Minnesota 27-14, the Golden Bears embarrassed themselves in a 34-0 loss at San Diego State.

SDSU outgained California 321-289 in total yards and won the turnover battle 3-0. Freshman signal-caller Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed just 17of his 38 passing attempts, throwing for 208 yards and two interceptions, and the Golden Bears racked up only 65 yards on 31 carries.

Cal bounced back last Saturday, outlasting Boston College 28-24 as a 6.5-point road dog. The Golden Bears won the turnover battle 2-1, overcoming a 14-0 deficit in the process. Freshman linebacker Luke Ferrelli picked off a pass in the end zone with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift Cal over Boston College, while Sagapolutele tossed for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

“We don't have to be perfect to win, I think that’s the most positive lesson we'll learn from this game,” Cal coach Justin Wilcox said. “Sagapolutele is a poised guy. For a freshman, to go out and make the plays he's made is very impressive. He's got so much great football in front of him.”

Sagapolutele has thrown for 1,242 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions over the last five weeks. However, the Bears need more from their ground game. Cal ranks 118th in the country in rushing yards per game (107.8).

The Bears score 24.8 points per game (tied for 89th in the country). They allow 18.0 points in return (tied for 34th) on 112.0 rushing yards (36th) and 195.2 passing yards (53rd).

Duke vs. California Pick 

Spread Pick for Duke vs. California 

• Duke -2.5 (5 units) 

The Golden Bears have only allowed two receiving touchdowns so far this season. However, they haven’t met an offensive unit as potent as Duke’s. The Bears have amassed just seven sacks thus far, and they might struggle to contain the Blue Devils’ balanced attack.

I’m backing Duke’s offense to make a difference in what should be a tight battle at California Memorial Stadium. The Blue Devils are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination, but they look like a better offensive unit than California. Yet, Duke has forced seven turnovers over the last two weeks.

The Blue Devils have gone 2-4 ATS in their previous six games overall, but they’ve covered the spread in five straight outings in conference play. The Golden Bears are 3-6 ATS in their last nine games overall and 2-4 ATS in their last six showings in conference play.

Over/Under Pick for Duke vs. California     

• Over 56.5 (5 units) 

While Duke leans on its offense, California relies on its defense. Hereof, the total looks like a tricky wager in this matchup. The over has hit in five of Duke’s last six games, whereas seven of Cal’s previous eight contests have gone under.

The Blue Devils gave up just three points to Syracuse last week. They won’t be able to shut California down. The Golden Bears have enough weapons to exploit Duke’s flaws and hurt the Blue Devils through the air.

Hereof, I will take the over. As I noted above, I lean on Duke’s offense to extend its strong run of form. Darian Mensah is having a great season, and the Blue Devils’ offensive unit is full of dangerous playmakers.
