Utes have improved defensively

Utah (10-18 SU, 13-15 ATS, and 15-13 O/U) lost 75-59 to Iowa State on Tuesday, failing to cover the 14.5-point spread. The Utes trailed by ten at halftime and couldn't mount a comeback, committing 18 turnovers and missing 12 of their 18 three-point attempts. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle and scored 20 points off the Utes' turnovers.

Utah has dropped nine of its last ten, but it covered the spread in six games. The Utes are tied with Kansas State for last place in the Big 12 basketball standings with a 2-13 conference record. They score 77.8 points per game (168th) on 45.3 percent shooting (180th), including 35.1 percent from beyond the arc (124th). Defensively, the Utes allow 81.2 points per game (322nd) on 47.2 percent shooting (328th), including 33.6 percent from three (175th). Utah ranks 111th nationally, including 98th in offensive efficiency and 161st in defensive efficiency, per KenPom.

The Utes are led by junior guard Terrence Brown, who scores 20.1 points per game on 45.0 percent shooting. He also averages 3.8 dimes per contest. A few other Utah stars to watch on Saturday against Arizona State are senior guard Don McHenry (17.3 PPG and a 39.4% 3PT%), junior forward Keanu Dawes (12.5 PPG and 9.3 RPG), and junior forward Seydou Traore (9.1 PPG and 3.5 RPG).

Arizona State has faced one of the toughest schedules

Arizona State (14-14 SU, 17-11 ATS, and 14-14 O/U) lost 90-78 to TCU on Tuesday, failing to cover the spread as 7.5-point 'dogs. The Sun Devils, who are 5-10 in Big 12 play, only trailed by three points at halftime but fell behind by as many as 19. They were off the mark (5-for-20) from beyond the arc and lost the rebounding battle 40-34, as the Horned Frogs grabbed 17 offensive rebounds. ASU's sloppy play (13 turnovers) was also costly.

The Sun Devils were 13-20 last season, finishing 4-16 in Big 12 Conference competition (15th place). After the regular season, they were invited to participate in the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament, where they lost in the first round to Nebraska. ASU is led by 11th-year head coach Bobby Hurley, who has compiled a 182-165 record in Tempe. The 2025-26 Sun Devils squad is ranked 68th nationally by KenPom, including 65th in offensive efficiency and 96th in defensive efficiency.

Arizona State has a new-look roster for this season, with only two returnees. Senior Pepperdine transfer guard Maurice Odum leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.2 points with 5.9 assists per game. Two other Sun Devils are averaging double-digit points: 7-foot-1 frosh center Mor Massamba Diop (13.8 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 2.1 BPG) and senior guard Anthony Johnson (13.6 PPG and 3.0 APG). A couple of other players to watch against Utah are sophomore forward Santiago Trouet (7.8 PPG and 5.6 RPG) and junior guard Bryce Ford (7.3 PPG).

Arizona State Sun Devils Injury Report:

  • No recent injuries.

Utah vs. Arizona State Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Utah vs. Arizona State

  • Utes +6.5 (4 Units)

Utah has been competitive recently, losing by four at Cincy, upsetting West Virginia as 10.5-point road 'dogs, and losing by two to UCF in three of its last four games. While they lost by 16 to Iowa State in their last game, the Cyclones are a much better team than the Sun Devils. I expect the Utes will be competitive again on Saturday in Tempe, holding Sparky in check from three-point range (33.5% opponent 3PT% in Big 12 play) and limiting free-throw opportunities. Utah has been very solid defensively as of late, ranking 8th nationally in defensive momentum, according to Haslametrics. ASU should win this game, but I doubt they have enough advantages to win by more than six points.

Over/Under Pick for Utah vs. Arizona State

  • Under 149.5 (5 Units)

These Big 12 squads combined for just 134 points in the previous matchup, and I expect they'll combine for fewer than 150 points again on Saturday. Both teams prevent opponents from firing away from three-point range, ranking 1st and 3rd in the Big 12 in opponent three-point attempt rate in conference play (the Utes also rank 4th in opponent 3PT%). Utah limits free-throw attempts, too, which will be impactful against a Sun Devils squad that tries to get to the foul line a lot. On the other end of the court, ASU will be tough to score against around the rim (top-75 in both near-proximity attempt rate allowed and opponent near-proximity shooting percentage). That's another x-factor, as Utah hopes to score in the paint (56th-highest NP attempt rate).

The under is 9-1 in Utah's last ten games and 8-2 in Arizona State's L10. Bet on that outcome in Saturday's conference clash!
