Georgetown has failed to build off late-January success
Georgetown (13-13 SU, 10-16 ATS, and 15-11 O/U) lost 93-89 to Butler as 5.5-point spread favorites on Wednesday. The Hoyas shot 57 percent from the field and outscored the Bulldogs 48-38 in the paint, but couldn't get stops on defense. Butler led by as many as 15 points and never trailed, knocking down 56 percent of their shots and 39 percent of their threes. Georgetown has lost three straight and is 5-10 in Big East play this season.

The Hoyas went 18-16 last season, including 8-12 in Big East competition. It was their first season with a winning record and their highest finish (seventh) in conference play since the 2018-19 season. Georgetown is led by third-year head coach Ed Cooley, who arrived in DC after spending 12 seasons coaching at Providence, where he compiled a 242-153 record. The Hoyas return ten players and were picked to finish sixth in the Big East's preseason poll.
Cooley led the Friars into March Madness in his third season at Providence, lending hope that Georgetown could make a similar leap after going from nine to 18 wins last season. While that hasn't happened, the Hoyas played UConn close twice and beat Clemson in non-conference play. GU retained most of its roster, but three double-digit scorers are gone, as Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy went pro, and Jayden Epps transferred to Mississippi State. Junior point guard Malik Mack leads the show, averaging 14.0 points and 4.3 assists, and junior shooting guard KJ Lewis has been a key contributor out of the transfer portal (15.5 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and 2.2 SPG). A few other Hoyas to watch on Saturday against Seton Hall are 7-foot-1 senior center Vince Iwuchukwu (11.7 PPG and 5.8 RPG), sophomore forward Caleb Williams (9.5 PPG and 5.3 RPG), and 7-foot sophomore center Julius Halaifonua (9.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG).
Georgetown Hoyas Injury Report:
- No key injuries to report.
Pirates held Hoyas to 67 points in the first matchup
Seton Hall (18-9 SU, 16-11 ATS, and 10-17 O/U) lost 69-57 to DePaul on Wednesday, failing to cover as 8.5-point betting underdogs. The Pirates led 35-33 at halftime, but managed only 22 points after the break. They outshot the Blue Demons, but the visitors hit 19 free throws and won the rebounding battle 35-22 with 13 offensive rebounds.
SHU is led by Shaheen Holloway, a former Pirates guard who is in his fourth season as head coach. He has compiled a 66-61 record (32-42 in Big East play) after spending four seasons at Saint Peter's, where he led the Peacocks to the Elite Eight in 2022. Junior guard Adam Clark leads Seton Hall in scoring this season, averaging 12.7 points on 45.4 percent shooting. He also contributes 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. A few other Pirates to watch on Saturday against Georgetown are senior guard AJ Staton-McCray (12.0 PPG and 1.6 SPG), junior guard Tajuan Simpkins (10.8 PPG and 2.8 RPG), and junior guard Mike Williams (7.0 PPG and 2.4 RPG).
SHU scores 71.2 points per game (308th) on 44.0 percent shooting (256th), including 31.7 percent from beyond the arc (306th). The Pirates' opponents average 65.2 points per game (12th) on 40.2 percent shooting (22nd), including 32.6 percent from deep (121st). Seton Hall is ranked 50th nationally, including 163rd in offensive rating and 12th in defensive rating, per KenPom.

Georgetown vs. Seton Hall Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Georgetown vs. Seton Hall
- Pirates -4.5 (4 Units)
Seton Hall will get the job done with its defense at home to cover the spread. Georgetown kept the score close in its last three games against Nova, UConn, and Butler, but the effects of those near-wins will test its ability to finish if Saturday's game is close. The Pirates will lock in to get stops on defense, testing the Hoyas' will. The Pirates haven't played their best basketball lately, but I feel confident they'll be up for the challenge and get back on track ahead of next week's road trip to UConn. They will work the ball down low, win the rebounding battle, and force their way to the free-throw line late in the game to clinch the win and cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Georgetown vs. Seton Hall
- Over 136.5 (5 Units)
These Big East squads combined for 143 points in the first matchup, so I see upside in a wager on the over at 136.5. The Hoyas will give the Hoyas a competitive game for 30-plus minutes, building off their strong play in recent games. They scored 89 points last game and made plenty of buckets in close losses to Villanova and Connecticut. The Pirates will manage to come up with clutch stops late in the game, but I doubt they'll dominate on that end of the court from start to finish, as they enter Saturday's game ranked 283rd in defensive momentum, per Haslametrics. I also like Seton Hall to score enough to push the total over the number, as they will challenge the Hoyas inside (tenth-highest near-proximity attempt rate) and work their way to the foul line (59th-highest FT attempt rate). Both teams rank in the top 15 in quick points off offensive rebounds, as well.
